Old Pats Under 10

Welcome

The Old Pats U10s is made up of over thirty active players, with the key focus on fun and enjoyment.

The players are divided into three mixed ability groups, with several coaches assigned to each squad, with the smaller numbers helping to maximise learning and build friendships.

Our Head Coach, James Hutchison, oversees all squads providing interesting, challenging and fun training sessions that are designed to teach the children the key skills required for rugby and to maximise the potential of all players.

The squads train and play their home matches at The Park Campus, University of Gloucestershire, The Park, Cheltenham. Training is generally between 09.30 and 10.45 every Sunday, unless we have matches when the times may vary.

All training and match day information is communicated to parents and carers via our Teamo management app.

Our ethos

The Old Patesians Junior section exists to encourage children and young adults to develop as rugby and team players throughout their time with us.

Our aim is that they maintain their participation in the sport throughout their junior years and progress to our senior section. To this end, the rugby environment we create for our young players must be safe, fun and inclusive. We welcome players of all standards, irrespective of ability or experience.

Our Club Ethos, based around the RFU core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline & Sportsmanship (TREDS), is at the very heart of everything we think and do to make this happen.

This season

The U9s season was curtailed due to Covid, and so the focus for the U10s is still on taking our first steps in tackling and contact rugby, and preparing for matches against other clubs.

We are looking forward to the 2021-22 season, where we have a few weeks of consecutive training sessions to prepare for our first matches, and then a busy schedule with fixtures against many of the local teams in Gloucestershire.

Having been introduced to contact rugby in the U9s season – and belatedly due to Covid – the U10 season is about consolidating tackling technique, as well as dend running.  Matches will also start to feature uncontested 3-man scrums from January 2021, with a focus on technique and safety.  The key aspect continues to be that the players enjoy themselves and fall in love with the game of Rugby.

Everyone is welcome to come and join in the fun.

U10 Head Coach

Our U9s season consisted of just 7 weeks, but it was extraordinary to see the players develop as a team in a short space of time, and to learn the principles of Rugby and the fundamentals of passing, catching, running and tackling. I’m very excited for the new season and to see what the group are capable of with a more consistent training schedule, and more fixtures against other clubs.

Coaching team and officials

Our coaching team, who are all volunteers, comprises 9 coaches under the leadership of James Hutchison and Mark Harris. Hutch and Mark have both been taking RFU coaching courses, including ‘First Contact’, which is particularly relevant to the younger age groups.

There are also trained first aid reps throughout the group, and all coaches are dedicated to the welfare of the players and committed to inclusive rugby to develop them both as players and individuals. We are very grateful to the hard work and commitment of our coaching team so please give them as much support as you can.
