After last week’s long away journey to play Banbury RFC, the Viking’s and Spartan’s returned to their home ground, the Park Campus, determined to further improve their performance.
After a much more focussed and promising warm up it quickly became apparent that the mornings play wouldn’t quite be what we expected it to be when Ledbury RFC turned up with significantly fewer players than we (and they) expected. However, a quick reshuffle of the Old Pats players into three smaller squads, rather than the planned two squads, didn’t knock the players off their stride.
In all three matches the Old Pats U11s played some eye-catching rugby, with their usual strengths of evasive running, strong support play and great passing particularly evident. Pleasingly, these strengths were also combined with a much better standard of defence, which resulted in some good pitch positions and plenty of possession. The challenge next time will be to get lower in the rucks!!
This was by no means a one-sided game though. Ledbury continued to battle hard throughout, and their players ran and tackled very hard all morning, scoring some lovely tries in the process.
Inevitably, as the morning progressed an already depleted Ledbury squad became further depleted by injuries, but their numbers were soon boosted again by Old Pats players keen to support their opposition (and test themselves against their usual teammates) – a great demonstration of Teamwork, Respect and Sportsmanship that bodes well for the future of the game!
After the final whistle had been blown all the players (and the odd coach) thoroughly enjoyed refuelling themselves by tucking into the delicious hotdogs that were kindly provided by the Betteridge family.
Finally, a massive thank you to Ledbury RFC for making the long journey, despite their significantly reduced numbers, when they could have easily cancelled. We look forward to the return fixture in the New Year.
