The Old Pat’s U11s Spartan’s squad headed over to Banbury to play a series of three games on a very fresh and bracing Sunday morning.
Everyone was looking forward to the fixture, but none more so than Theo J on account of Banbury RFC being his previous club. As such, the Spartan’s had a great deal of inside information on the opposing players and were not afraid to use it….
Pleasingly, the Spartan’s squad and all three Banbury squads were equally matched in skill, size and desire to get over the ball. This resulted in three keenly contested matches, all of which displayed similar themes. Firstly, the trademark Spartan’s darting and piercing runs with ball in hand that almost always resulted in a try. Secondly an increasing propensity for our players to not tackle low enough to stop an oncoming opponent from responding in kind. Something to work on in the next training session perhaps…
One player today deserves special recognition for his amazing improvement over the season, culminating in a determined display today: Jacob F. Jacob put his hand up to regularly position himself at first receiver and could be counted upon to pop a swift pass to progress a play. On several other occasions he was able to provide impressive link play to assist in tries. Well done Jacob!
It did feel as if the pendulum swung marginally in favour of alternating clubs over the day. However, it was great to see both sides becoming more creative and expansive with each game. Our hosts extended the customary North Oxfordshire hospitality in the form of tasty hotdogs and hot drinks and we look forward to reciprocating their kind hospitality in the New Year.
