The Old Patesian’s RFC U12s is made up of just over 50 active players divided into three mixed ability squads. Our Head Coach, Richard Simpson (a level 2 RFU coach), along with 9 other volunteer coaches have worked with the majority of the players since they started in the U9’s. Our coaching team, along with the support of Team Manager James Speller, aim to provide interesting and challenging training sessions that are designed to maximise the potential of each and every player whilst still having fun and learning the importance of teamwork. As an age group we aim to play a fast paced game, where support play, offloads and agility are essential skills.
Each of the three squads has its own identity (Viking’s, Spartan’s or Barbarian’s) and its own team of coaches to guide them through fixtures. We hope this helps build a sense of identity and belonging, as well as a little friendly rivalry between the squads. However, on training weekends all three squads train together at the Park Campus (University of Gloucestershire, Cheltenham) in order to ensure the players understand they all represent Old Patesian’s RFC. At the end of each season we reorganise the squads to facilitate new friendships (and to ensure the squads remain equally competitive).
New players are always very welcome!
The Old Patesians Junior section exists to encourage children and young adults to develop as rugby and team players throughout their time with us.
Our aim is that they maintain their participation in the sport throughout their junior years and progress to our senior section. To this end, the rugby environment we create for our young players must be safe, fun and inclusive. We welcome players of all standards, irrespective of ability or experience.
Our Club Ethos, based around the RFU core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline & Sportsmanship (TREDS), is at the very heart of everything we think and do to make this happen.
Each season we organise approximately 14 ‘fixtures weekends’ against other sides and participate in festivals whenever possible. Due the effects of COVID-19 we have not yet managed to go on tour, but we do have a tour planned at the end of the 2021-22 season.
Training sessions are held at 9.30am (until 11am) on Sunday mornings at the Park Campus. The times and venues of matches can vary slightly but are always on a Sunday morning. All training and match day information is communicated to parents and carers in advance.
We have a strong squad of boys and girls who have stuck together through the challenging times we have recently experienced and are looking forward to an exciting full 21-22 season ahead.
We will help and guide any new players who wish to play rugby and believe fully in mixed ability squads with equal opportunities to all players. We are lucky to have a large support from parents at training and matches and I look forward to seeing everyone at the start of the season and throughout.
New players are always welcome and you do not need any experience to join us.
