U12s Tour to Hereford
U12s home from a very successful tour to Herefordshire
The Old Patesian’s RFC U13s consists of just over 45 active players. These players have been divided into two mixed ability squads (the Barbarian’s and Viking’s), each of which has its own designated lead coach, who is an RFU Level 1 coach, as well as a team of assistant coaches, many of whom will either be working towards their Level 1 qualification or specialists in a specific area of the game, such as lineouts or the England Rugby ‘activate’ initiative. Player welfare is extremely important to us, so each squad has a couple of first aid trained coaches and all of our volunteers are DBS checked. We also have a designated parent who acts as the ‘Safeguarding officer’ for our age group.
Our Head Coach, Richard Simpson, with the support of our Team Manager, James Speller, oversees the entire age group, ensuring that our team of volunteer coaches provide challenging, interesting and fun training sessions that maximise the potential of each and every player whilst also developing all those other important skills and qualities, such as teamwork, respect, humility, empathy, resilience etc.
As an age group we aim to play a fast-paced game, where support play, offloads, creativity and agility are essential skills. Simply put, we do this because we believe this is a more enjoyable way to play and enjoyment is extremely important to all of us.
As an age group we also recognise the important role that friendships and having fun plays in sustaining children’s participation in sport. For this reason, we do not focus on winning (although we do try to win as much as we can). Instead, we focus on developing new skills, challenging players to be the best player they can be and on creating more friendships. This is why we do not train as separate squads, but as one large group, why we organise tours and socials and why we mix the squads up at the start of every season (this facilitates new friendships and helps us to maintain evenly balanced squads).
Finally, as an age group we do not believe in having a waiting list. Therefore, new players are always very welcome!
We believe that the 2023/24 season will be a significant one for the boys. The boys are entering a phase where the game becomes more complex and physically demanding. For this reason, we will begin to introduce an element of ‘Strength & Conditioning’ to the training programme and, in addition to continuing to develop the core skills of the game, focus on significantly improving players’ tactical understanding and decision-making.
The key changes for this year are:
The exact details of the season are likely to change in response to various factors, but we have planned for 14 weekends involving fixtures, with the rest dedicated to training. This means we will no doubt come up across many familiar opponents, but also many new teams that we haven’t played before.
At the end of last season, we embarked on a highly successful 3-night tour to Yorkshire. This year we intend to organise a shorter, one-night tour, to give us time to plan (and save up) for a larger tour in the U14 season. In addition to this, we have a number of social events planned throughout the season.
Our Club Ethos, based around the RFU core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship (TREDS), is at the very heart of everything we do.
We are committed to developing the confidence and self-belief of every player from the U9’s to the Seniors by providing them with the opportunities, encouragement and support they need to enjoy their rugby to the full and fulfil their potential as a player and a teammate.
To this end, the rugby environment we create for our young players, irrespective of ability or experience must be safe, fun, and inclusive.
Old Pats is committed to mixed ability sides offering equal opportunity for all as players develop skills at different ages. Investing in all our players, rather than a select few, results in players, parents, teams, and the club as a whole benefiting in the long term.

The Eagles impressed as they came out deserved winners against a determined Brockworth side.
In the wild, Lions and Tigers are rarely seen together, but it is widely known the two have sincere respect for one another, just like the Old Pats Lions and the Cheltenham Tigers.
Following a hard fought victory over Stroud, the Lions unleashed a torrent of tries against neighbouring Dursley.
Dursley Tournament – Huge huge huge well done to all the players, and coaches, a performance that everyone can be proud of.
It was an overcast, muggy autumnal morning, but the buzz was building nicely on the sidelines for Old Pats U12’s first matches of the season.
