James Hutchison – New Junior Chairman
Message from new Junior Chairman James Hutchison
The U9’s is the beginning of an incredible journey through the age groups, up to Colts and hopefully beyond.
The U9’s comprises players who have either spent several years with Tag Trojans (established by Old Pats/Gloucester ex-player Chris Raymond and now run by his son Marcus), joined from other clubs or who have never played rugby before.
(Additional information to go here once 2023-24 officials have been appointed)
Our ethos is based on inclusivity; where every player will be given equal opportunity to develop their rugby skills at a pace that suits them, regardless of experience or ability.
Match teams are NOT selected on ability but on attitude and commitment. We have 3 team groups for the season, (Exiles, Vikings and Saxons) all of the same level, and all of mixed abilities.
The squads train and play their home matches at the Old Patesians home ground on Everest Road, Cheltenham. Training is generally between 09.30 and 10.45 every Sunday, unless we have matches when the times may vary. And of course, away fixtures will be something we all look forward to as our fixture programme kicks off from January 2023.
All training and match day information is communicated to parents and carers via our Teamo management app – details of which will be shared once registration is complete.
The U9’s are the youngest age group at the Old Pats Juniors. We will commence training on 20th November, following the conclusion of the first term of Tag Trojans on 13st November. As with all age groups the new U9’s will be coached by parents with children in the group. The coaches will have attended RFU coaching and Safeguarding courses along with First Aid courses.
The age group will train at Everest Road for their first season and they will also play home matches there. We welcome all children to the Pats U9’s irrespective of rugby experience and they will form part of inclusive mixed ability teams as they start their journey through the club.
Anyone who is interested in registering their player should email the club via the contact form below and we will get back in touch with you.

Having come together as a management and coaching group from September this year, our coaching team have been working alongside club junior chairman Alistair Armstrong and the Tag Trojans team to begin the development of the U9s age group at Old Pats.
We are a team of parents with a common love for rugby, and a variety of experience as players, coaches and students of the game. We are driven by the passion and joy of seeing the youngest of age groups develop into well-rounded, skilled and respectful sportspeople, playing rugby to their strengths in teams of mixed ability. Albeit this is a slightly shorter season for the U9s, we will run a full schedule of training, fixtures and hopefully competitions, home and away, from November to May.
We are really looking forward to welcoming the kids, and their families, on this journey and wholeheartedly ask you to support us, and the club, in any way possible.
The U9 coaching team have been selected from parents of players who have either graduated from Tag Trojans, joined from other clubs or who have never played before. Parents of players of all abilities are encouraged to consider joining the coaching team – it is never too late and we are always looking for volunteers!! Coaching, kit, socials, sandwiches – we need as much help as you can spare!!!
Our coaching team comprises parents who have played, studied and enjoyed rugby for many years.
All our coaches will go through Safeguarding, First Aid, Coaching, Contact and Refereeing courses, supported by the wider club and their policies and procedures.
We are very grateful to the hard work and commitment of our volunteer coaching team so please give them as much support as you can, on and off the pitch.
Our Club Ethos, based around the RFU core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship (TREDS), is at the very heart of everything we do.
We are committed to developing the confidence and self-belief of every player from the U9’s to the Seniors by providing them with the opportunities, encouragement and support they need to enjoy their rugby to the full and fulfil their potential as a player and a teammate.
To this end, the rugby environment we create for our young players, irrespective of ability or experience must be safe, fun, and inclusive.
Old Pats is committed to mixed ability sides offering equal opportunity for all as players develop skills at different ages. Investing in all our players, rather than a select few, results in players, parents, teams, and the club as a whole benefiting in the long term.

Friday evening saw the Colts, winners of the Gloucestershire League (North) take on Lydney, the Southern champions for the honour of being crowned best U18 team in the County.
Having triumphed in the League playoff final on Friday evening, the Colts ran out for a rearranged friendly fixture at Bradford on Avon this Sunday.
U12s home from a very successful tour to Herefordshire
As part of the integration of next year’s Colts side, we forged a hybrid U16/17 team to take on a similarly formed Stow side.
Needing a bonus point win to secure successive league titles, the Colts turned on the style to overwhelm Cirencester.
