Mixed Ability Junior Rugby Success with Old Patesians
Old Patesians U12s have etched their names on two cups with a remarkable double, claiming both the inaugural John Brain Cup and the prestigious Land Rover Defender Cup on back-to-back weekends. Both tournaments supported and operated by Gloucester Rugby.
These triumphs are not just fleeting moments of success but a testament to the dedication, teamwork, and countless hours of hard work that this group of young players have put in over the years. The core of the team has been playing together for nearly four years, forging strong bonds and developing an impressive understanding of the game.
This particular age group, founded and coached around the mixed ability ethos of Old Patesians Junior Rugby, has 50 active players. The largest in the county and likely far beyond. The coaching and management approach fosters teamwork, growth and, most importantly, enjoyment of this amazing game. It’s a challenging time for community rugby at all age groups, and levels, but this ethos clearly continues to bear fruit and ultimately keep players playing.
The club and coaching staff have long recognised the potential of this talented squad, investing heavily in their development and ensuring that every player receives ample opportunities to grow. Their hard work bore fruit in spectacular fashion as they dominated both tournaments, showcasing fantastic levels of skill and discipline against competitive opposition.
One of the most pleasing aspects for the coaching staff was the manner in which these victories were achieved. In attack, the team demonstrated a structured and disciplined approach, maintaining possession, building pressure through multiple phases, and executing fast, accurate passing to exploit space. Their ability to stretch defences with blistering pace on the flanks saw them run in scores born of strength and skill.
However, perhaps even more impressive was their defensive resilience. Despite facing physically imposing opposition from across the county, this Old Patesians team—though smaller in stature—proved to be giants in heart. Their commitment to backing each other and their tireless defensive efforts resulted in an extraordinary defensive record: in nearly two hours of rugby and across 11 fiercely contested matches, they conceded just a single try.
The future is undoubtedly bright for this group of players, and with their relentless work ethic and passion for the game, there is no telling what they can achieve next but for now, these boys can take immense pride in their achievements. Congratulations to all of them.
