On an unseasonably gorgeous October morning the Viking’s squad headed to Stow on the Wold RFU for their first away fixture of the 2021-22 season.
After their last visit to Stow many of the boys were apprehensive before the game, aware that the teams they would be facing would be strong. However, the Viking’s squad really raised their game and competed brilliantly in both games. In particular, their teamwork, support play and intensity in the tackle shone through, as they battled hard throughout, showing great resilience against some strong running individuals.
Stow were more decisive and effective at the breakdowns, but Old Pat’s played well as a unit, keeping the ball alive with their offloading game. Pleasingly, the tackling continued to improve, with players tackling in twos and threes. Whilst easy to separate the teams from their style of play it was not as easy to separate them on the scoreboard (if there were one).
It’s safe to say that the Viking’s will learn lots from what was easily our most competitive fixture in 18 months.
Well played to all the boys involved!
Onwards now to next Sunday’s fixture against local rivals Cheltenham Tigers RFU.
