Whatever your aspirations – the occasional 20 minutes off the bench followed by a well-earned refreshment talking through your exploits with the other ‘Gentlemen’ in the Third Team; playing League rugby for the Second Team against other local clubs first teams; or developing your game and running out in the starting 15 in the First Team competing against high quality opposition – Old Pats is your opportunity to fully enjoy the game of rugby on and off the pitch.
The First Team compete in South West One Level 6 and are proud to represent the town across the South West, along the M5 corridor, and all the way down to St Austell in Cornwall.
The First Team is firmly rooted in the tradition of the Old Pats with the core of the team having played for the club since they were kids, many have played together for most of their rugby life.
The Second Team play in Gloucestershire 2 North (Level 10) playing league games against other local clubs’ First and Second teams.
The Second Team is a fantastic transition for players aspiring to First Team rugby or for those craving competitive league rugby with a Gloucestershire focus.
The Third Team, known as “The Gentlemen”, provide long-standing Old Pats players with competitive social rugby, playing other clubs across the county, whilst they support the transition of players from the junior to senior teams.
We have a fantastic senior set up supporting all standards of playing ability through our 3 senior teams. As the senior coaches our passion is to develop and improve all our players in becoming better players. Concentrating on individual development will always then improve the team!!
We are community club and the social side is almost as important as the rugby! The Pats love nothing more than a social! Socials range from beers after a game, to race nights, summer balls and golf days!
First Team Head Coach
The playing squad are coached by a team with a true Old Pats flavour who have a genuine love for the club and share the passion of the players.
A number of the coaches are long-standing Old Pats who have played or coached at a higher level and returned to help the next generation. Chris Downes, Head Coach, has played at a professional level for Ebbw Vale and Ruaridh McConnochie, Skills Coach, is a current member of the Bath Squad and has recently represented England they both rose to the professional game through the community game and are able to bring their experience to develop the players.
Over half the squad have played for the Old Pats since they were in the juniors and others have been part of the club for more years than they would care to mention, Connor Thompson, Club Captain has been part of the club for a decade and has coached in the juniors.
Gethin Evans has been adopted by the club having started his playing career across the bridge with Llanelli – but has been an Old Pat for over 15 years and has coached in the juniors and colts.
Whilst we are an amateur rugby club, we approach the game with a professional mindset both on and off the field to allow every player to develop and enjoy their game.
