A palpable air of excitement was in place as a confident and talented Colts side took on Olney in the National Cup.
We had played some blistering rugby to get this far and had hopes of continuing the journey. However, there are no bad teams at this stage and we knew we were in for a tough one.
The torrential rain earlier in the week meant the pitch was cut up and heavy under foot. Not ideal for our brand of fast-paced offloading. It was the same for both teams however and we had to make the best of it.
Choosing to play uphill in the first half, as is our preference, it was obvious that they weren’t here to make up the numbers and some shrewd kicking combined with direct running and strong support play put us under the cosh from the start.
An early converted try put us behind but we managed to get some possession, forced a penalty and kicked to the corner. A concerted effort saw the pack drive over – Conor at the base of the heap. Sadly the conversion angle was too wide but we were in the game.
Olney scored another after some phase play and neat passing, again well converted but approaching half time we were only 14-5 down with hopes the slope would work its magic for us in the second half. Unfortunately, a loose pass and a kick through allowed them a break away try on the stroke of half time putting us further behind.
No matter, we are nothing if not resolute and reinforcements came off the bench. We needed the next score and had chances but Olney were quick off the line and exerted pressure well. Time and again our attacks broke down and eventually we conceded a fourth try.
The lads refused to go quietly though and three more tries of our own, scored by Ethan twice and Conor again narrowed the gap but we are unable to convert any to really rattle them.
The final result was a disappointing end to an excellent campaign but, in fairness, they were very well drilled, strong and skillful and deserved the win. On another day, maybe we would have been luckier but the commitment shown by the whole team, and the wider squad who turned out in force to support, was fantastic to see. Right to the end we were fully engaged in the struggle and it wasn’t for any lack of effort that we came up short. All the coaches are incredibly proud of the entire group who have worked so hard to get as far as we did.
It must be said that he opposition were a great bunch who conducted themselves with sportsmanship throughout and were generous in victory. We look forward to a rematch at some point if it can be arranged.
